The Turks imprisoned and tortured Captain Petko Voyvod in the tower in 1863.

In 1890, the tower was whitewashed and thus got its current name. Although it is light beige today, it is still called the White Tower. The tower is now located on the coastal boulevard “Niki”. It houses the Byzantine Museum and is one of the city’s main tourist attractions. The building is run by the Greek Ministry of Culture and the Byzantine Antiquities Agency.

The ground floor and six more floors are connected by a 120-meter spiral staircase along the outer wall. The tower is considered a symbol of Thessaloniki and a symbol of Greek rule over Macedonia.

The Bulgarian Secondary School for Boys in Thessaloniki is closed, as are the Secondary School for Girls, the Bulgarian Church of St. Cyril and St. Methodius, the Bulgarian Church Municipality, the Board of Trustees of the Exarchate and many other Bulgarian cultural institutions. Repressions of Greek soldiers against Bulgarians, Jews and Turks were recorded, which led to armed clashes with Bulgarian units.
